Early Years Foundation Stage

A warm welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage at Stoke Minster Primary Academy. We are so proud of our learning community we have created in Early Years Foundation Stage with children, their learning and wellbeing at the very heart of all that we do. Both the Nursery and Reception classes are led by fully qualified teachers and skilled Early Years Practitioners.

The Foundation Stage Curriculum

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of Learning and Development. The three prime areas are:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development.

These prime areas are most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in four specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts & Design

These seven areas together are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. Children in the EYFS learn by creative and critical thinking, by playing, exploring & being active - both indoors and outside. Assessments are made throughout the year & are based on observations and knowledge of the whole child. We value your input into these as you will obviously see so much that we don’t.

Early Years Foundation Stage Planning Cycle

Planning cycle(1)

Although we have overarching themes and texts and which we follow thoughout the year, our curriculum is driven by the childrens facinations and personal interests.

For more information please read the 'Early Years Foundation Stage Policy', which can be found in the Policies section of this website under Important Information.
