Year 5 - Miss Jones, Mr Burgess, Miss Willis and Miss Forster

Welcome to Year 5

Happy new school year from the Year 5 team. We are really excited to be teaching your children this year and we have lots of exciting topics and activities planned. Please explore our page for more information and come back regularly as we will update this page throughout the year with important information and celebrations of your children’s work.

Miss Jones and Mr Burgess

Miss Willis and Miss Forster (Teacher Support Assistants)

Father's Day

Thanks to all the Dads who came to Father's Day we enjoyed a lovely afternoon of 'Blow Football' followed by a class penalty shoot-out. Miss Jones' v Mr Burgess class. Mr Burgess' won!

Mothers Day

Thanks to all the mothers', grandmas' and sisters' who came in for Mothers' Day. We all had a lovely time eating scones, playing games and sewing. There may even have been a few tears too!

Going Greek!

The children have been hard at work exploring Ancient Greek pottery. We found out about different aspects of Ancient Greek life and investigated different patterns. Using papier machet, paint, and a lot of patience, we managed to recreate our very own pots. Some of these even tell the story of their very own myth. Really well done children. You have SPARKLED!!

World Book Day 2018

The children looked fabulous as we celebrated World Book Day. We had a wide range of characters from Matilda to Willy Wonka, from Harry Potter to Long John Silver, and even Tigger! We enjoyed the day thoroughly and delved into the magical world of books. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and effort children! Keep up the great reading as it's a skill that will benefit you so much as you continue to grow!

Spring 2018

Happy New Year!

This term in year 5 we will be moving on to the Gory Greeks! We shall study them throughout our literacy, topic, geography and history.

In Science we will be looking at the properties and changing states of materials before moving onto time and space.

We will also have Bikeability at some point this term so keep an eye out for letters on that!

This should be a fun and exciting term and we are excited!

Year 5 and our Healthy Snack Factory!

We have been given the task of inventing a new, healthier snack bar for Mr Willy Wonka. The children have researched different products and put their research into practise by creating their very own "healthier" invention. There were some really imaginative combinations (chocolate  and carrot anyone?) and all the children really enjoyed themselves. Very well done to you all! Mission accomplished!

Dogs Trust

Alison from the Dogs Trust visited year 5 & 6 pupils to talk about how to stay safe around dogs. The talk was very informtive and the children learnt a very valuable lesson. Some even suggested that they might like a pooch of their own. Our apologies for this :-)

Trip to Cadbury World 06/10/17

Year 5 had a superb trip to Cadbury's World in Birmingham. We managed to fit an awful lot into such a short space of time and the children (and staff) were superbly behaved, a real credit to the school. We began the day with an amazing trip to the 4-D cinema and followed this with an informative talk about the Mayans. It was clear the children have listened in class as they were all pretty clued up on the topic. We then had to rush through a tour of the factory, but managed to fit in the most important part of the day...a cup of melted warm chocolate fresh from the factory! You were all absolutely fantastic and contributed to a wonderful trip. Thank you!

Children will need to bring their P.E. kit in every day. On Tuesdays, the children will work with Mr Henderson exploring healthy lifestyles and sport. A further class P.E. session will be held every Friday.

Homework will be set each Friday to be handed in the following Wednesday. One piece will be set and this will either be maths or literacy based. Spellings will also be sent out each week.

Reading is such a huge part of your child's education. It is expected that your child reads at least five times a week at home and that they bring a signed reading diary in each day alongside their reading book. Please also ensure that your child is reading a wide variety of different materials.

Year 5 so far...

Hi everyone. We've hit the ground running in year 5 and have already covered many different and difficult difficult concepts. The children have impressed us with how quickly they have settled in and have continued where they left off in the summer. Well done year 5!

In maths, we have been exploring the world of Place Value and have considered numbers all the way up to 1,000,000. The children can now order these numbers and have  even begun to round them in a  number of ways.

We have been reading the wonderful book of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the children have written a wonderful description of Mr Willy Wonka.

Mr Henderson has been teaching us all about how to live a healthy and active lifestyle and the children have identified ways in which they can be more active and eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Keep up all the good work children! The year is promising to be superb already!

Class book and topic

This term we will be reading Roald Dahl's classic 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.' This links into our topic of the Ancient Mayans as we explore the origins of chocolate. We will also be asking if the Mayans were so powerful, why didn't their culture survive?

A trip to Cadbury's World has been planned for Friday 6th October to tie in with both these  themes. Whilst experiening a real life chocolate factory, the children will also receive a professional workshop on the Ancient Mayan civilization. We look forward to posting some super photos from this trip. More details will follow soon.
